Jewelry Care Lesson From An Olympic Athlete!

The 2016 Olympics are in full swing and the world is captivated by the accomplishments of the Olympic athletes.  But on Sunday, it was a pearl earring that had everyone on the edge of their seats!

During the preliminaries for the 100m Women's Backstroke, Team USA's Kathleen Baker lost one of her pearl earrings in Rio's Olympic pool with a depth of 10 feet.

Scuba gear is not usually what we think of seeing in an Olympic pool but it was used to recover the lost earring in Baker's own lane around the 15 meter mark!  Kathleen went on to win the Silver medal so the story ended with a flourish!

A lesson can be learned from the lost earring, however. Although you may be tempted to swim in your jewelry, it is not wise to do so.  Not only do you risk losing it like Kathleen, the chlorine in swimming pools can damage your jewelry.

It can break down the molecular structure of gold which leads to disintegration, hairline cracks and blackening.  Pearls present an additional problem.  The chlorine in swimming pools can destroy the luster of a pearl on contact.  Getting pearl earrings wet is risky in itself - the pearls are glued to a metal post and the glue can disintegrate when wet.

So, take precaution with your jewelry and take it off before you dive in!
