Summer Skincare Routine

I feel like I haven't spoken about my skincare routine in a long old time. To be honest, I haven't really had much to say about it. My routine doesn't change too often as I try to use up products rather than swapping and changing. With the arrival of the warmest Summer I have ever witnessed, comes a skincare struggle. The constant heat takes its toll on everyone: it automatically makes you more tired, it is hard to sleep unless you have a fan blasting on every inch of your body and it is hard to keep up a good level of hydration. As gross as it is, literally everything makes me sweat when it is this hot. All of that sweat takes away essential water and minerals so it is important to drink lots of water and to adjust your skincare to help promote skin hydration.

In this post I am only really going to talk about my evening routine as I have a very minimal skincare routine in the morning. However, the morning is when I use my most hydrating products which typically contain lots of Hyaluronic Acid which attracts moisture to your skin and holds it. My evening routine is much more about removing the dirt and grime from the day and then putting the work in to keep my skin looking soft and hydrated.

Garnier 2-in-1 Eye Makeup Remover

The first product that kicks off my whole skincare routine is my eye makeup remover, the most boring skincare product possible. I have been using the Garnier 2-in-1 Eye Makeup Remover. I think this could be about my fourth bottle of this. The reason I keep using this one is because it works and it is cheap. I wear a lot of mascara and eye makeup so I need a hardy remover. I put this on a cotton bud, leave it on my eye lid for a while, swipe and basically my eye makeup is gone. I have always wanted something that didn't take too much effort to take off all of my eye makeup as I do not want to rub my eyes too much. The skin around your eyes is so delicate and it one of the first places you show signs of ageing and I am trying to avoid that at all cost. I'm sure there are better eye makeup removers with better ingredients but at the moment I am happy with this one.

First Aid Beauty - Coconut Makeup Melter

Not only do you have to worry about sweating but during Summer I used a strong SPF as I burn like a crisp if I don't. It is important to make sure you fully remove all traces of SPF or it will clog your pores and will cause spots. As someone prone to spots this is something I desperately want to avoid so I have started to double cleanse every night. I have been starting my cleansing with the First Aid Beauty Coconut Makeup Melter which was one of the products I got in the ASOS Summer Skin BoxAt first I wasn't really sold on this but the more I have used it, the more I have enjoyed it. It is a gel formula so it is cooling on the skin which is exactly what I need when it has been so bloody warm. This will not remove my eye makeup but it gives it a good go. As I remove my eye makeup before I use this product it doesn't matter but if you are considering trying the makeup melter it is something to consider. It has a very light coconut scent which is great for summer and it takes off every inch of make up, and I wear a lot. My skin feels clean after using this but most importantly it doesn't feel stripped. This works great on my makeup but I have no idea if it works on my SPF so I make sure I use something after just to make sure my SPF is gone. This is a mini size and I seem to be getting through it quite quickly which is slightly disappointing as I do really like it.

Estee Lauder - Advanced Night Cleansing Foam

The Estee Lauder Advanced Night Cleansing Foam automatically lends itself to being a second cleanser as you use it on wet skin. Typically I do not like foaming cleansers as they tend to contain sulphates and they always seem to feel quite drying. I possibly haven't tried enough of them but personal I prefer a balm cleanser. A balm is too thick to use as a second cleanser and I wanted something a bit lighter for the Summer which is how I started using this regularly. The Cleansing Foam does not strip my skin but it certainly feels clean once I have used it. This takes off any makeup I may have missed when I did my first cleanse and I hope it also works on my SPF. You can't see your SPF so it can be hard to tell but my skin certainly looks and feels clean after I have finished my double cleanse. When you first put some of this product in your hands it has an almost marshmallow like texture but once you add water to it, that is it, the bubbly foam texture that you expect a foam cleanser to be comes out. I am really liking this cleanser. I do have a deluxe sample of this but I use such a small amount every time I cleanse my face that I think this is going to last me quite a long time.

I think the combination of the First Aid Beauty cleanser and the Estee Lauder foam works wonders. The First Aid Beauty cleanser is quite light but it gets off every scrap of product on the surface whereas I feel like the Estee Lauder cleanser goes a little deeper and works to remove more of the dirt and grime of the day. I have been using these two together for a good couple of weeks and I have seen an improvement in my spots and I am attributing it to this combination.

On a normal day I will move on to my serum but if it is a treat day, or I feel like my skin needs a bit of a pamper, this is the point I will include a mask. Depending on what my skin problem is on that particular day I will either use the Glamglow Powermud or the Glamglow Glitter Mask. It sort of depends on how much time I have and how much effort I want to go to. However I'm not really going to talk about something I do occasionally and I'm going to move on to the products that I use everyday. After giving my skin a good cleanse, it needs hydration and mositurisation so this is when I start to add it back in to my routine.

Mario Badescu - Facial Spray

Recently I did a small order on Beauty Bay, it was only two items so it didn't seem worthy of a blog post but I will be doing a whole post on the other item I bought. To bulk up my order a bit I decided to give the Mario Badescu Rose Facial Spray a go. I've heard all about these sprays online and I've always wanted to try one, I am a massive fan of MAC Fix + and I wanted to see how they compared. During Summer I like to keep a bottle of facial spray tucked away in my fridge for when it is unbearable hot, just to give me a moment of refreshment. I highly recommend doing this, if you don't already. I have also been using this as part of my skincare just to give my face a little refresh before moisturising. I love the smell of this product, it is quite a strong rose with a hint of herbs. I'm not sure that these types of water based sprays actually do anything but they are worth including in a Summer skincare routine purely because they give you that moment of relief from the heat.

Kiehl's - Creamy Eye Treatment

After I have cleansed my skin, I go straight in with my eye cream. I have been using the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment for over a year now and I have just treated myself to my second tub. One thing I have to say is that the first time I bought this I went straight for the big tub, Don't!! It is way too big, you will never get through it before it goes past its best before date and then it starts to go off. The small size is the perfect amount. You only need a small amount of this eye cream and I recommend rubbing it between your fingers to warm it up before you apply it to your under eyes. If you don't warm it up, this is such a thick product that it will just sit on top of the skin. This is amazing if you suffer from dry eyes or problematic eyes. Before I started to use this cream I was suffering with quite dry skin around my eyes but this cream really helped to sort it out and I haven't had the problem since I started to use this cream. If you haven't tried this eye cream and you are thinking about giving it a go, I can highly recommend it. I think the fact that I repurchased this eye cream says a lot for how much I like it. If you want something a bit lighter the new Daywear Eye GelCreme from Estee Lauder is amazing as well.

Estee Lauder - Advanced Night Repair

If you are a regular reader, you will know I have been using ANR for years and it is included in every single skincare post I write. I cannot be without a bottle. I do not know anyone who has tried ANR and has not been impressed with it. My friends who are all mid-20s love it and my mother loves it and she is older. I won't say my mum's age as she would kill me for saying it out loud but it works for her as well. ANR is such a universal product that it works for everyone. It is marketed as a anti-ageing product which it probably is but it does so much more than that. Obviously I hope its anti-ageing properties work but that is something I will only be able to tell as I get older but on an everyday level this helps to promote the renewal of skin cells which helps to keep your skin looking plump and fresh. This is always the first product I apply to my face after I have finished cleansing as the first product you apply will have the greatest effect. There is no interference from any other products so it can penetrate the skin. ANR is expensive but it is worth it, in my eyes.

Rodial - Dragon's Blood Sculpting Gel

I received a sample size of the Rodial Dragon's Blood Sculpting Gel in the Marks and Spencer Beauty Advent Calendar last year and little did I know that it would be the perfect product for Summer. If you can't tell I love a gel texture for Summer as it has that automatically cooling effect and that is exactly what I need for this time of year. I adore the scent of this product, it is like a tropical cocktail which typically I will be drinking on a Saturday during Summer. The scent just helps to reinforce that sense of refreshment. This claims to be a sculpting product but I have no idea whether that actually works. I do not have the chiseled cheeks of goddess, instead I have slightly plump cheeks so it is hard to tell whether anything works to make me look more sculpted. Since I have been using this, I have noticed a difference to the freshness of my skin which is something I embrace so I have started to use this everyday. There is no way on Earth I would buy the full size of this product at £85 as I really do not see the results I would expect from this sort of price tag but as something I received as part of set, this is something I will happily use.

Nip + Fab Kale Fix Moisturiser

Since I opened the ASOS Summer Skin Box, I have incorporated quite a few of the products into my daily routine and the Nip + Fab Kale Fix Moisturiser is the second product that has made it into regular use. I have been using it as my night time moisturiser as it is more like a thick lotion texture. At this time of year I do not want to be using a thicker cream which I tend to favour during the cooler months. This moistuiser gives my skin everything it needs whilst locking in the rest of the products, keeping my skin looking dewy and fresh. I would never have picked this out for myself but as I have it, I have really been enjoying using it. At first this does leave a bit of a film over the skin but as the evening goes on, it completely sinks in. Once again this is a cooling product, most moisturisers are, but this one is quite refreshing on the skin as it isn't thick so it doesn't just sit there. My one problem with this product is the smell, it is quite green. Sounds weird to describe it as a colour but it has that earthy, herb scent, literally like it is kale. I can get past the scent as it is not very strong but I would have preferred something which wasn't as scented. The ASOS Summer Skin Box really came through with it's products, I highly recommend checking their boxes out. This month's contained Clinique products but it sold out super quickly. I will be doing a blog post on it but I need time to test out the products.

Kiehl's - Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Much like the masks, I do not use the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate every night. I probably use it about once a week. I think it's thick oily texture is too much for my skin during Summer but I really like the results this product gives me. However as I said it is quite thick so it does have tendency to just sit on the skin. If you have read my Beauty Wishlist for 2018, then you will know that the Midnight Recovery Concentrate was included, well I have finally tried it!! I do really like it. I haven't been using it every night because, as I said, I think it is a bit much for the current climate but I could see this being a firm favourite for the Winter months.

As much as I complain about the weather, I have been enjoying sitting in the shade, in my garden with a cup of tea and my laptop. Even though I've made it sound like the Summer/hot weather completely destroys my skin, it doesn't. In fact, my skin is probably the best it has been in terms of spots and hydration. I think it is because it is something I am conscious of so I have worked my skincare around it. All of these products will change over the next year but my one major skincare essential for Summer is SPF, sun protection is no joke! My personal favourite is the Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense, it is very light and it has SPF 50. I haven't done written a skincare routine is quite a while so I hope you have enjoyed this post and if you would like a dedicated post detailing my morning routine, just let me know and I will certainly write one if there is any interest!
